Object Observation - Metal - Collect 2024

Simone ten Hompel
When I entered this room, sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm and calm atmosphere over the exhibited works. Simone presents a set of metal utensils - obscured silver, rusted iron, and oxidized brass - accompanied by uneven surfaces, even accumulating dirt and grime. As Tanizaki described in 'In Praise of Shadows', "as a general matter, we find it hard to be really at home with things that shine and glitter.” By combining Western metal utensils with unpolished Oriental aesthetics, these works evoke a sense of tranquility.
So I decided to polish my brass box myself and discovered that using dry grinding with around 120-grit sandpaper could create curved lines on the metal surface. These curved marks also revealed the path of polishing. In addition to shaping, the texture of the surface, polished through seemingly inconspicuous craft, adds subtle stylistic differences to the works.
